Hotel Saravana Bhavan is one of the largest South Indian restaurant chains in the world, founded way back in 1981. They have more than 33 outlets in India with 20 of them being in Chennai. They also have 47 outlets around the world in countries like Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Singapore and others. Hotel Saravana Bhavan was started by a man who dreamt of making it big. It was started with a simple idea driven by a lot of passion. Today, Hotel Saravana Bhavan is one of the leading South Indian restaurant chains in the world and here’s the story behind this successful brand.

The story of P Rajagopal seems straight out of a movie as contains all the elements of struggle, passion and drama. Born in a mud house in 1947, P Rajagopal belonged to small village known as Punnaiadi in Tamil Nadu. He left school when he was in the 7th grade to earn a livelihood, and started working at a restaurant where he wiped tables. Later, he worked as an attendant in a grocery shop, which led him to open his own grocery store in the outskirts if Chennai with the help of his father and brother-in-law. This was his first experience of starting a business on his own and he faced many challenges while running the store. Things were not working out as planned initially but his willpower won over all the hurdles and the situation started improving gradually. 

It was at his grocery shop, where he had a conversation with a salesman in 1979 which led to the birth of Hotel Saravana Bhavan. The first outlet was launched in 1981 in Chennai and by the 1990s it started spreading to different neighbourhoods in the city. Rajagopal always believed that focusing on the quality of food and customer experience was very important.Initially, he had to run the restaurant at a loss in order to provide the best quality food. At that time, he was losing about Rs 10,000 every month, but over time his reputation grew and the losses were converted into profits as his restaurant became popular for its good food.
