Here is an interesting history of this famous dish and from where it all basically started from. Pehalwan Da Hotel at Paharganj is one of the oldest dhabas which started serving delicious North Indian food to refugees back in 1948.

Pehalwan Da Hotel when translated literally means Wrestler’s Hotel. It is situated right opposite the New Delhi Railway Station is considered to be one of the best restaurants come dhaba in Delhi. It all started back in 1947 when at the time of partition a man named Lala Hansraj Tandon, came to India abandoning his belongings in Pakistan. He started selling goat’s trotters called Paya in Paharganj in front of the railway station. After one year he started with a proper dhaba when the refugees were allotted shops in front of the New Delhi Railway Station. Paya which is an unconventional part of the mutton is the famous dish at this dhaba.

It took time for the local population to get used to the taste. But some who got fancy kept coming for more and more after that. It is the consistency of the quality and taste that this dhaba has maintained over the years.The third generation of the family has now entered the family business. And the owners, very proudly mention that there is a third generation of customers too that still come to eat there, once in a while!
Pehalwan Da Hotel is a saviour for all the non-vegetarians out there. Some of their other famous dishes which are worth trying include Keema Kaleji, Tawa Magaj Palakwale, Chicken Curry, Mutton Biryani and much more. They also serve some lip-smacking vegetarian food which is also worth trying.
